Week Three: Called to Mission…

Opening scripture

Jesus said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”
Peter answered, “Master we have worked all night long but have caught nothing.
Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets.”

Gospel of Luke 5:4-5

Introduction to the theme

Through the dignity of our baptism, we are called for mission and gifted by the Holy Spirit. Whatever our context – family, work, friends, our local community or even online – we are each given what we need to share the Gospel message of hope. We might not see ourselves as gifted in this way. We might need new skills or the opportunity to grow in faith in order to feel confident. But like the disciples in today’s Scripture, if we can let down our nets for a catch, we might be surprised by the result.

Reflect on this passage from the Final Synod Document

Pause to let the Holy Spirit prompt you. What is striking you as you reflect? Is anything surprising you? Is anything challenging you? Let the words and ideas sit with you for a while.

A question to ponder through your day…

If you put down the nets in your hearts what gifts and treasures might they reveal? What is God calling you to?

Closing Prayer

Glory be to the Father to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be

world without end,

Amen.

Pope Leo, Homily for Jubilee of Synod Teams, 26th October 2025

“Dear friends, we must dream of and build a more humble Church; a Church that does not stand upright like the Pharisee, triumphant and inflated with pride, but bends down to wash the feet of humanity; a Church that does not judge as the Pharisee does the tax collector, but becomes a welcoming place for all; a Church that does not close in on itself, but remains attentive to God so that it can similarly listen to everyone. Let us commit ourselves to building a Church that is entirely synodal, ministerial and attracted to Christ and therefore committed to serving the world”.
